Overcalculation

Waiting for ideal conditions. Trusting only your own judgment and going it alone.

Overcalculation illustration

What it looks like

The plan is excellent and nobody else has seen it. You keep refining because the conditions are not quite right yet. You do not ask for help because explaining would take longer than doing it, and because other people would get it wrong. When you finally act, it is alone, and if it fails there is nobody to catch it.

The flattering misread

Patience. Self-reliance. Thoroughness. “Measure twice, cut once.”

The tell

A perfect plan nobody else has seen.

What it protects

The vulnerability of acting before you are ready, and of depending on people who might let you down. Overcalculation keeps you in control by keeping you alone.

Where it shows up

Scale, when the size of the thing demands a complete plan before the first step. Visibility, when you hide the work until it is flawless. Repair, when you recover privately and nobody knows you were down.

The move back

Show someone the plan before it is done. Set a date to act that does not depend on conditions being right. Ask for one piece of help you could technically do yourself.
