Too little
· Pattern 7 of 10
Resignation
Outcomes feel predetermined, so choice narrows to endurance.
What it looks like
“It is what it is,” before anything has been tested. You have decided how this ends and you are waiting for it to end. You still show up. You have stopped trying to change anything, because trying has started to feel naive. You call it realism.
The flattering misread
Realism. Maturity. Stoicism, misunderstood.
The tell
You cannot name the last thing you tried that was not already guaranteed to work.
What it protects
The pain of hoping and being wrong. Resignation makes sure you are never disappointed, by making sure you never expect anything.
Where it shows up
Slow build, when the long wait curdles into giving up. Depletion, when you have nothing left to try with. Repair, when the setback gets read as proof that nothing works.
The move back
Test it. Pick one thing you have decided is impossible and run the smallest possible experiment. The Stoics did not accept outcomes before they happened. They acted fully and accepted what followed. The order matters.
