Too much

· Pattern 5 of 10

Scattered effort

Raw effort and goodwill with no shared judgment. Everyone busy, nothing accumulating.

Scattered effort illustration

What it looks like

Everyone is working hard. Nobody can say what the three most important things are, because there are fourteen. Initiatives start and do not finish. Effort gets measured in hours and meetings rather than in what changed. At the end of the year, everyone is exhausted and nothing is different.

The flattering misread

Work ethic. Being all in. “Look how much we’re doing.”

The tell

Activity is up and nothing is compounding.

What it protects

The discomfort of choosing. Scattered effort means never having to tell someone their thing is not the priority.

Where it shows up

Volatility, when every signal gets a project. Scale, when the size of the problem makes you attack it everywhere at once. Slow build, when you add initiatives instead of protecting the one that matters.

The move back

Pick fewer things. Say which ones out loud, and say which ones you are not doing. Measure what accumulated, not what happened.
